Happy 2015

January 12, 2015

Fred Herbst

It’s been a cold but good start to the year in the studio. 2015 looks like it will be another busy one including travel back to France. I will also have work in the Worcester Center for Crafts Pottery Invitational and the AKAR Yunomi Invitational, so stay tuned! I hope everyone is having a warm, safe, and peaceful start to 2015.

History in the Making VIII

October 24, 2014

Fred Herbst

I was honored to be asked to jury an exhibition (titled History in the Making VIII) for the Firehouse Gallery in Rochester, New York open now through Nov. 8th. The works in the show have some element of historical reference and came from all over the US. It was great to see the work in person after jurying them from images- nothing compares to the real object! It was even better since two of the pieces were by a former student of mine, Travis Winters, who is currently an artist in residence at the Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts in Asheville, North Carolina.

France summer 2014

August 5, 2014

From July 2 to July 14, I was once again in France to teach a wood-fired ceramics and glassblowing workshop at Domaine de Boisbuchet. This year the workshop was titled “Vitrification” and I co-taught it with British designer Max Lamb and Tom Ryder from the Corning Museum of Glass.

Material Generation Panel- NCECA

April 3, 2014

Fred Herbst

Spring in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for NCECA.

On March 21st I moderated a panel discussion on wood-fired ceramics titled “Material Generation” for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. The panelists were Simon Levin, Tim Rowan, and Tara Wilson and they presented their work and international success as studio artists. The turnout for the panel was great and the interest in wood-fired ceramics practice continues to grow.

Each year, the NCECA conference has been very important for me since I get to travel to a new city, see a huge amount of ceramics, reconnect with old friends, and meet new friends. This year’s keynote was delivered by the amazing Theaster Gates from Chicago. His call for more diversity in ceramics and art was delivered in a very powerful speech  and he left the stage to a standing ovation. It was a highlight of the conference for me!
